Specialist Anger Management Counselling

Why Anger Management Counselling?

Some people experience difficulties with managing their feelings and emotions and often this can result in feeling resentful and blaming others for the way that they feel. This can often result in becoming frustrated and angry, leading to intimidating, aggressive and abusive behaviour which can ultimately result in violence.

People with anger issues can become impatient very quickly in many situations which also has a negative affect on their physical health and wellbeing.

We hear much in the media about the frustration of drivers which can lead to ‘Road Rage’ and the devastating effects that such aggressive, angry and violent behaviour can have on the victim of that abuse. We hear about front line and customer-facing staff such as shop assistants or nurses in casualty being assaulted by frustrated, angry, aggressive and violent customers. Sadly, as our society creates a culture of material satisfaction, and the expectation that we and our two point four children should wear expensive brand named clothes for example, we are increasingly under pressure to maintain an image of success and work long hours, often in a job in which we are unhappy, to pay for it all. This can lead to feeling resentful as well as leaving us feeling exhausted. Sound familiar?

These typical situations, as well as many others, can trigger predictable patterns of behaviour which can result in us becoming angry. Feeling anger is ok. Anger becomes a problem when it affects your behaviour to such an extent that it is used abusively against others.

Some of the most common comments we hear from clients are:

  • “I just have a short fuse; it’s just the way I am.”
  • “When I get angry, I just lose it.”
  • “They just pushed me too far.”
  • “Anyone would have done the same if they were in my position.”
  • “I inherited it from my dad’s side of the family.”

It doesn’t have to be this way!

At Brighter Futures, we understand conflict, intimidation, aggression, rage, anger and violence very well and the associated feelings and emotions. We work with male and female clients as well as adolescents to empower and enable them to understand anger and we have a very comprehensive program with strategies that will help those who want to change and become non-abussive, to live fruitful and meaningful lives. Please feel free to contact us for details about our our very successful and comprehensive program.

  • We also provide materials for clients to work with at home. The costs of most of the materials are covered in the session fees.

Depending on the presenting issues, there may be a requirement for additional areas of work. We also provide materials for clients to work with at home. The cost of most of the materials is covered in the session fees.

For domestic violence issues, please see our ‘Specialist Domestic Violence Program’ page.

Clients' Comments

“Taking the first step of recognising that I had the problem and I needed some help to change was tough but they treated me like a human being which was more than I did to people. I wish I’d done it years ago.”

“My life was so black and white and my way had to be right. Now I say that my life is full of different colours and I don’t need to be right all the time.”

Brighter Futures

How long is the program?

This is dependent on the presenting issues and the motivation and commitment of the client to change. As you can see, there is a lot of work to cover in our sessions and some people grasp the concept and understanding of this work faster than others.

We advise that a minimum of between ten and twelve sessions be completed and we would re-assess the client’s progress and mutually agree what will happen next. Each counselling session lasts for one hour and clients will be given work to complete at home between sessions.

Where do we work from?

We can meet for personal counselling sessions at our offices in Plymouth. In certain circumstances, we can meet at the premises of other agencies or service providers. Due to demand, we also offer a Telephone and Web Based Counselling Service for people who live in other areas of the county or country and cannot personally attend counselling sessions. However, we do advise those who are able, to personally attend for counselling.

Group Work

We also provide anger management group work for adults and young people. Please contact us for details about group work.

What does it cost?

Individual sessions cost £40. However, if you pre-pay for several sessions in advance, or you are an agency or organisation commisioning our service on a regular basis (such as Schools or Social Services for example) we can agree a discount. We will also consider the circumstances of those on low incomes.

Summative and formative reports and risk assessments are charged separately. Please contact us for further information.
